Dave makes a great save
About 4 1/2 months back Dan and Dave were loading hogs to go to the butcher. Dave really liked one of the girls Dan loaded and told him so Dan took her off the trailer. She had her first set of piglets last week. She had 9 and still has 9. She is extremely protective and will not even come out of the hut to eat until we have left her pen. Now that is a great mom!

Hi!
ReplyDeleteNow that I've completed the red tape, I can comment on your blog. It's so very interesting. I'll need to share this site with my sister, who wishes she had grown up on a farm!
I was wondering, how do you decide which pigs go to the butcher? Do some pigs stay with you forever? And finally, what is the name of this mama with the nine piglets?
See you Sunday.
Petra,
ReplyDeleteThis mom doesn't have a formal name. Right now she is refered to as Island mom. We have an area of our property that is like an island of woods and that is where she is.
Right off the bat, the barrows (castrated boars) go to the butcher. From there we have to narrow it down. We can only keep about 24 gilts (females that have never given birth) a year to add into our breeding stock. We try to only keep the best. They should come from a good mother. Now if the gilt was raised in the house chances are the mother was bad yet we become attached to them so they are given a chance. I cannot say if anyone will stay forever. To date no one has stayed more than 4 years.
